Screen South Presents

Between Gaze and Flow, with Alexandrina Hemsley (Founder, Yewande 103)

Please let us know of any access needs.

Join dance artist Alexandrina Hemsley for a masterclass exploring movement for camera. Drawing from her film FOUNTAIN (2022), Alexandrina will share the motivations behind her screendance practice and offer a space to reflect on how a dancing body calls for the camera not as a tool of capture, but as a witness. How can screendance empower performers to refuse capture and maintain agency in the act of being seen? Drawing from her interdisciplinary process, the session will consider how the camera becomes a portal connecting dance to audiences. The session will include movement-based tasks, creative writing, and hands-on experimentation with the camera to explore these ideas in practice. Moving between gaze and flow, together we’ll ask: what becomes possible when the body flows beyond the frame, opening towards something ever more vibrant and complex?

Alexandrina Yewande Hemsley is a dance artist and writer whose interdisciplinary practice deep dives into the sensorial and bodily, seeking breath and voice amidst injustice and inequity.
Her work has been commissioned by Sadler’s Wells, DaDaFest, Disability Arts Online, Somerset House, South East Dance, TheaterForman, Dance City and others, spanning live performance, film, and text.

In 2020, she founded Yewande 103, a dance company that centres the tender overlaps between creativity and mental health through immersive, accessible projects. Yewande means “mother has returned”, a name that roots the company in cyclical, intergenerational patterns of expression, care, and repair. Our stories live in our bodies.
